Newburyport: Traffic stop leads to drug arrest

NEWBURYPORT — A New Hampshire man was charged with trafficking cocaine after a routine traffic stop Monday night.

Officer Michael Wilichoski saw a Dodge Durango roll through the stop sign at Pond and High streets about 10:45 p.m., according to police reports. After pulling the car over, Wilichoski discovered that the driver, Byron Lind Jr., 31, of Somersworth, N.H., had an outstanding warrant for trespassing out of Newburyport District Court.

While frisking Lind, Wilichoski found a small scale and a razor knife with white powdery residue on them, according to reports. After obtaining Lind's consent, police searched the car, and Kaybar, a police dog, discovered a plastic bag of cocaine in the car's child safety seat.

The bag contained 14.5 grams of cocaine, a half gram over the threshold for trafficking, according to police.

Lind was charged with trafficking cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of drugs near a school and failing to stop at a stop sign. He was arraigned yesterday at Newburyport District Court and held on $10,000 cash bail.
