Heard Around Town: Students call for 'gas strike' today

High school students around the area are asking everyone they can think of to send a message about high gas prices. The idea: Take today off from buying gas.

The method of communication: via text message, of course.

Danielle Keenan, a junior at Triton Regional High School, isn't sure where the text message started, but she said it's caught on at her school as well as Amesbury and Newburyport high schools. Keenan is definitely doing her part to spread the word. She's texted at least 100 friends, and she said she's heard many other students buzzing about it.

The text message reads, "The nation is attempting a GAS STRIKE. ... Friday May 2nd. Don't buy gas!! Send to everyone in your phone!! So get be4 or after."

Danielle didn't stop there. She's also put up a sign outside the door where she works, Cafe di Siena in Newburyport.

"Everyone's doing it!" she said.
