Port paint company pays $267K EPA fine

NEWBURYPORT — Valspar Corp., which makes paints and stains in Newburyport under the Cabot brand, paid a $267,000 settlement to the Environmental Protection Agency after the EPA alleged the company improperly labeled its products.

The EPA said Valspar violated the federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act by claiming two Cabot wood cleaners killed mildew and mold, while it had not subjected the products to EPA pesticide tests.

The EPA also said Valspar did not submit reports on toxic chemicals it used to the agency. The violations occurred from March 2006 to February 2007, according to an EPA press release.

Valspar employs about 100 people at its Newburyport plant just outside the industrial park.

A Valspar spokesman said that the EPA notified the company in September of the problems, and that Valspar had released the reports and changed its product labels so they no longer promote the cleaners as pesticides.
