Councilor can now give counsel

Kathleen O'Connor Ives paid close attention to her mailbox at the beginning of the month. Any day, the first-term Newburyport city councilor was expecting to get one of two envelopes in the mail: a fat one or a skinny one.

The fat one was bad. The skinny one not just good, but a mountain of relief in the form of a small letter.

Finally, the skinny one arrived, marking the end of a years-long journey to reach the level of counselor — the attorney version, that is.

The Spring Street resident, who graduated from Pace University School of Law in May 2007, passed the bar exam on her first attempt. The skinny envelope delivered the news about a week ago.

She won a spot on the City Council in November last year.

The at-large city councilor said she was more than relieved to get the good news and could not imagine getting a fat one — which would have meant another four weeks or so of intense studying.
