Triton students urged to be politically active

BYFIELD — The Newbury Democratic Town Committee is working with a Triton High School faculty member and a Newbury representative to the Triton Regional School Committee to plan an assembly designed to encourage students to vote and become active in their community.

The assembly will be held Monday, May 19, starting at 8 a.m. The first part will feature questions in a debate-style format for state Rep. Harriett Stanley, who represents the Triton towns of Newbury and Rowley, and state Rep. Michael Costello, who represents the Triton town of Salisbury.

Timothy Coyle, the school's history program coordinator, will moderate, and a panel of students will ask questions.

A second segment will consist of a voter registration drive and what organizers described as a "mini convention." Students turning 18 will be able to begin the voter registration process, and there will be tables devoted to three issue areas: civil rights and liberties, the environment, and state and local issues.

The assembly was proposed by Frank Chiaravalloti, a member of both the Triton School Committee and the Newbury Democratic Committee. Organizers included Coyle and political science students at Triton, and Democratic Committee members Luann Kuder, Melissa Mashburn and Mary Beth Pelletier.
