GEORGETOWN — Donations are needed to pay for mowing Union Cemetery until the new budget takes effect July 1.
At the recent Town Meeting, voters appropriated $10,000 for the upkeep of the cemetery, which was recently taken over by the town. However, that money will not be available until July, and the cemetery will need to be mowed three times between now and then, at a cost of $450 per mowing.
The total donation needed is $1,350, according to Joe Knapp, whose dedication to preserving the cemetery resulted in the town taking responsibility for its upkeep.
Donations can be made by check, made out to "Georgetown Historical Society" with a note to "UC mowing fund" and mailed to the Georgetown Historical Society, PO Box 376, Georgetown, MA 01833.
Money will also be collected at Dan Meader's General Store on East Main Street or at Theo's Restaurant on North Street. Knapp recommends writing a check to have a record, as donations to this cause are tax-deductible.
Any additional money raised will go toward restoring the stones and landscaping in the cemetery.
