Scenic views of New England on display at West Newbury library

WEST NEWBURY — Tammy Tolosko captures scenic New England in photographs and watercolor paintings, and her work will be exhibited at GAR Memorial Library this month. The exhibit can be seen during regular library hours through June 30.

"Inspiration abounds in old barns covered with snow, stately Colonials beckoning invitingly, colorful boats bobbing in a sparkling ocean, serene gardens full of color and aroma or working farms that provide a stark contrast to our technology-laden times," Tolosko writes in an artist's statement accompanying her work.

She uses photographs to inspire her work with watercolors and charcoal drawings. The key, she says, is to find images "that are not just superficially pretty, but those that are steeped in deep layers of meaning, feeling and provocation.

"A good photograph is not solely to be viewed. It should also awaken other senses, allowing the viewer to experience the photograph more fully. The sight of golden sunflowers against a vivid blue sky can evoke the touch of the summer sun on bare arms, the sound of bees buzzing amongst the nodding blooms, and the smell of flowers wafting gently in the air," her statement says.

A Massachusetts native, Tolosko holds a bachelor's degree in graphic design from the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
