HEARD AROUND TOWN: Trick horse rescued, sent to West Newbury

Two rare horses have made West Newbury their home — a trick horse named Noir who can pick up and throw a rubber ball and rear or bow on command, and a miniature horse that stands at less than 3 feet tall.

They are just two of the several horses the New England Equine Rescue Society has saved from "kill-pens" in Pennsylvania.

"We are always raising funds and looking for foster homes," said NEER Massachusetts representative Mary Martin.

Martin has done some research as to where Noir came from but has found nothing.

"We don't know how or why he ended up in the kill-pen," she said.

Though Martin plans to keep Noir as a mascot for NEER Massachusetts and showcase his talents at local horse shows, Martin says there are plenty more horses that need homes.

"We need people to foster the horses, too, while we evaluate the horse or rehab them," Martin said.
