Spanish-Tudor home with green twist on house tour

GEORGETOWN — The Georgetown Historical Society is sponsoring a Historical House Tour on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Seven private homes, the Brocklebank Museum and School House No. 3 will be open for the tour. Many of the homes selected were built in the 1800s and have been maintained and restored in keeping with the original architecture and historical value. All proceeds will benefit the continuing restoration of the Brocklebank Museum.

Visit this Spanish-Tudor eclectic home and catch a new green twist to kitchen style. This stucco and red-tile roof home has undergone a complete renovation since purchased in 1989. Built originally as a summer retreat and sited with a view of Pentucket Pond, the home retains many of the architectural eccentricities built in by the original builders and owners. With 10 rooms, three baths, extensive perennial gardens, including a rain garden and many original estate plantings, this house retains much of its Arts and Crafts-era charm. It was built by the Pettingill family, a Haverhill shoe industry family, in the early 1930s.

The current owners have renovated it over an 18-year period, a project at a time. This past November a new kitchen, office and entrance were added to increase the availability of light, correct flow issues and consolidate smaller spaces into larger ones. An energy audit conducted at the time exposed many areas where insulation could increase wintertime comfort and warmth. Many green products were added, including concrete countertops, floor tiles made of recycled glass and desk-tops made from recycled wood pulp. See the added beauty and healthful additions to this lovely home.

Tickets for the tour are available mid-August for $20 at Sedler's Antiques, Theo's Restaurant, Meader's General Store, all in Georgetown, and Kay's Interiors in Groveland. The day of the tour, tickets will be available at the Brocklebank Museum. This is an adult event, including only children 10 and over for the $20 price, and we ask that backpacks are left home.
