Citizen Police Academy classes to be held again

AMESBURY — The Amesbury Police Department is now accepting applications for the next Citizen Police Academy Program, which begins on Wednesday, Oct. 1. The program will be held each Wednesday evening for eight weeks until Nov. 19. The classes are from 6 to 9 p.m. and will be held at the Amesbury Police Station Conference Room, 19 School St.

The objectives of the Citizen Police Academy are to familiarize participants with various aspects of law enforcement, an understanding of the criminal justice system and insight into the operations of the Amesbury Police Department. Participants will be able to learn more about the duties of a police officer and the community services of the Amesbury Police Department.

Topics will include: crime scene processing, evidence collection, accident reconstruction, K-9 training, Special Operations Unit (SWAT), domestic violence, criminal investigations, the court system, drug investigations, training, state accreditation and more. A two-hour cruiser ride will be offered to participants over the age of 18, as well as a tour of the Essex County House of Correction.

Applications are available at the Amesbury Police Station or online at www.ci.amesbury.ma.us, under the Public Safety/Police Section. Those interested in participating in the program should complete and sign the application, then return it to the Amesbury Police Station, through mail or in person, by Sept. 12.

The cost of the program is $25 for adults and $20 for seniors/students, which helps provide refreshments for the program. Payment is not necessary until the applicant is accepted and the program begins.

Class size is limited. Applicants will be required to submit to a standard records check and may be denied access to the program depending upon the results.
