Bicycle 101 to educate riders on safety this week

The YWCA is offering Bicycling 101, a six-hour course designed for novice bicycle riders or advanced cyclists who do not feel confident in traffic. It will be taught by Pierre Avignon, a certified instructor from the League of American Bicyclists.

The course consists of a two-hour presentation on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. at the library, and an "on-bike" session on Saturday, Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

All proceeds from the course will go toward the purchase of bike racks at the YWCA. A helmet is required and participants must be at least 16 years old. Bicycles must be in good condition. The cost for the program is $60.

Interested participants can register online at www.lmvb.org or by calling 978-510-1021 before Wednesday. Donations toward the bike racks can be made at the YWCA, 13 Market St., Newburyport.
