Merrimac senior activities

Afternoon at the Movies: "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day" with: Frances McDormand and Amy Adams, Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 12:45 p.m. The movie is free. The meal will be $2.50. (Sign up ahead.)

Amesbury Playhouse: "Social Security"; Oct. 1, 7 p.m. dinner, 8:30 show; Oct. 5, noon dinner, 1:30 show

"Dracula"; Oct. 22, 7 p.m. dinner, 8:30 show; Oct. 29, noon dinner, 1:30 show.

To make reservations, you must call the Senior Center two days prior to the show, 978-346-9549. If you want dinner, call 978-388-9444 for a dinner reservation. Tell them that you are attending as part of the free senior show from Merrimac so that you do not get charged for the show.

Holiday Fair meeting: Oct. 8-Nov. 8; hand-crafted items, raffle, white elephant table.

Sal's Poker: Thursday, 1-4 p.m.

The Merrimac Red Hatters: Wednesday, Oct. 8, at DiBurro's in Haverhill, 11 a.m. Tri-City Ladies host a luncheon and speaker Billy Graham who will demonstrate "One Purple Dress:" how to accessorize one item of clothing. Cost is $29 paid to Lorraine. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Granite Rose, Hampstead, N.H., 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Portsmouth Scarlett O'Hatters' return with their annual Fashion Show, Luncheon, vendors and entertainment. Cost is $46, paid to Lorraine.

Yoga classes: With Mary Van Abs. Chair yoga classes are on Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. Donation: $3. Yoga classes are on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. Donation: $5.

Wii, The Game: Thanks to the Friends of the COA the Senior Center now has the Wii. We have the following games: baseball, golf, boxing, tennis, bowling and the new Wii Fit. The games are played on a large-screen TV at the Senior Center. Wii will be scheduled for Monday afternoons at 1, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, 9-11.

Painting Classes with Beverly Mitchell. Classes will be on Thursdays from 1:30-4 p.m. The cost is $5 per class.

Additional exercise classes will also be held on Fridays. Classes are on Friday, 9:30 -10:30 a.m. The cost is $3 per class.

Elder Services: RiverWalk 6K Walk & Run, Sunday, Oct. 5 at 10 a.m.

Volunteers Opportunities: Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley is seeking Volunteers for the Friends in Deed program. Volunteers will help improve the daily lives of older adults in a variety of ways including companionship, food shopping, running errands, taking elders on outings, and giving rides to medical appointments. Elder Services is a private, non-profit agency serving the 23 cities and towns of the Merrimack Valley. We provide older adults with in-home services, basic necessities, emergency assistance, programs and education which allow them the choice to remain in their homes. Volunteers are given an orientation, training and ongoing support as well as a mileage reimbursement. For more information on how you can help, call 800-892-0890 ext. 1445.

Trip slide show: Monday, Oct. 27, 12:30 p.m. A Yankee Line, Inc. will present a slide show on a trip scheduled for February 2009, the 26th Annual Daytona Beach 2009 Winter Activity and Show Tour at the Ocean Walk Resort. Highlights: condo apartments, optional activity itinerary, including: entertainment, dinner shows, party nights; optional trips including state park picnics, boat trips, shopping shuttles, theme parks, and of course bingo. Choose to travel by Yankee Line deluxe coach or by plane.

Document shredding available: The Friends of the Merrimac COA have generously purchased and donated a heavy duty shredder that will shred paper, credit cards and DVDs. There will be 15-minute time slots on Fridays, between 9 and noon. Call the Senior Center or stop by to reserve a time.
