19th Apple Harvest Run attracts strong turnout

WEST NEWBURY — The 19th annual Apple Harvest Run drew more than 400 runners and walkers from the North Shore region and beyond on Sunday, Oct. 5.

The event was a fundraiser for the John C. Page Elementary School, with 100 percent of proceeds benefiting educational and cultural programs for its students. The run was held at the Bachelor Athletic Fields and Action Cove Playground and included the traditional USATF certified 5-mile road race, 1-mile Fun Run, and the 2-mile Health Walk.

Alison Jones, race director, thanked all the sponsors, especially the gold sponsors: The Provident Bank, Executive Gourmet Services, Café Valverde, Smyth Graphics and Active Life Chiropractic.

The day's activities included entertainment by West Newbury School of Music, children's activities and home-baked goods from Page School parents. Warm-up exercises were led by Page School second-grade teacher Paula Pressler, and the 5-mile race was kicked off by police Chief Lisa Holmes. Events wrapped with a raffle for a mountain bike donated by Riverside Cycles in Newburyport.

The Fun Run was won this year by Jeff Porter and Lea Guldemond, both of West Newbury. The overall 5-mile race winners were Craig Fram of Plaistow and Julie Lavelle of Boston. For full results of the race, visit www.coolrunning.com. A summary of winners by age category is provided below.
