Program for parents of teens slated for January
NEWBURYPORT — The city's Youth Services department will offer a class for parents this winter, in response to feedback asking for resources to help them stay involved in their teenagers' lives.
Beacon Coalition Prevention Project Coordinator Sarah Hayden said yesterday the program is slated to start at the end of February. Called "Staying Connected with Your Teen," it will consist of five, two-hour workshops.
The weekly workshops are the result of parental feedback to surveys and studies by the Beacon Coalition, Youth Services Supervisor Andrea Egmont said yesterday. Parental involvement is known to decrease when kids enter high school, she said, and parents have wondered how that can be fixed.
The science-based program will focus on different areas and teach parents how to improve problem solving, bonding with their teen, family discipline practices and bringing a teenager into the family's decision-making process, Hayden said.
The target audience is parents of teens ages 12 to 17, Hayden said. It will be facilitated by Becky Dill, an instructional assistant at Nock Middle School, who has a background in social work.
"Other communities have found it extremely successful," Hayden said.
"Staying Connected with Your Teen" was formerly known as "Families That Care." It is administered by the Channing Bete Company. It was developed by two educators at the University of Washington, known for their work in the area of risk and protective factors.
Parents who enroll in the program will possibly pay a small fee, Hayden said, such as the cost of the workshop booklet. The Youth Services Department will be notifying local social services agencies about the start of the program, as well as the schools, police department, Anna Jaques Hospital, the clergy association and the District Attorney's office.
