NEWBURYPORT — A Newburyport police officer was taken to the hospital Wednesday after an early morning three-car crash on Low Street.
Officer Kevin Martin was taken to Anna Jaques Hospital as a precaution but was released hours later.
"We are gathering information right now," Lt. Mark Murray said Wednesday afternoon. "It is a joint effort between us and the state police; there were no injuries, and the other two drivers walked away."
Murray said Martin was about to pull one of the drivers over for speeding at about 7 a.m. and had his lights and sirens on at the time of the crash.
It was unclear how two other cars were involved in the accident.
"We will be gathering more information from the cruiser's black box device to find out what happened," Murray said.
The drivers of the two other vehicles, Elizabeth Halloran-Knox of 12 Toppans Lane, Newburyport, and Christine Webster of 32 Low Street, Newburyport, were driving Buick and Mercedes sedans. Neither was charged with any violations, according to Murray.
Murray said the cruiser, one of the newer ones purchased by the city, had extensive damage.
The accident is still under investigation.
Officers Dani Michalek, William Steeves, Matthew Simons, Sgt. Peter Finnegan and Marshal Thomas Howard, as well as state police, responded to the scene.
