Stabbing of two local men leads to drug arrests

LAWRENCE — Two men suspected in a Haverhill stabbing of two Newburyport men late Wednesday night were arrested minutes later in Lawrence with 11âÑ2 pounds of marijuana in their possession, police said.

Joel Sabino, 20, and Angel Hernandez, 21, both of 5 Saunders St., Lawrence, were arrested and charged with illegal possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and illegal possession of marijuana in a school zone. No charges were filed in the Haverhill stabbing Thursday, police said.

Lawrence police said they found three, gallon-sized zip closure freezer bags of marijuana, two cell phones and a kitchen knife in Sabino and Hernandez's possession when they arrested them late Wednesday night.

"This knife may have been used in a stabbing from Haverhill," Sgt. Shawn Quaglietta wrote in a police report.

Haverhill police said the two Newburyport men were attacked at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of the Mobil gas station on Route 110, just off exit 52 of Interstate 495. The assailants were two men they may have known, police said.

Alexander Noujaim, 21, was stabbed with a knife, just above his right elbow, and received two puncture wounds that were not life-threatening, police said. The man he was with, Peter Juarnaccia, 21, told police that his attacker held a knife to his throat and threatened him.

"This was not a random act, as the victims and suspects did have some type of association with each other," Deputy police Chief Donald Thompson said.

The injured men were found in the Russett Hill Road area, which is off Elliott Street, and close to Northern Essex Community College, police said.

Lawrence police started looking for Sabino and Hernandez around 10 p.m. after Haverhill police put out a radio broadcast about the stabbing that had taken place minutes before. Officers in that city were looking for a 1990 Toyota Camry wagon, which was registered to a woman living at 5 Saunders St. in Lawrence.

Patrolman Jamie Adames was familiar with the owner of the car and her son, Joel Sabino, whom he had arrested one week earlier.

When the duo arrived on Saunders Street, police said they were waiting for them. When police pulled up behind the Camry wagon, Hernandez bolted from the car. Seconds later, Sabino also bolted.

After a brief chase and struggle, the pursuit ended on Park Street with help from state Trooper Daniel Doiron, who was in the area.

An investigation into the Haverhill stabbing continues and detectives from both departments are working cooperatively, police said.
