Woman recovering from bite

NEWBURYPORT — Police say two women were attacked by a dog on Belcher Street Sunday night, sending one to the hospital with leg injuries.

According to police, the women were walking down the street when a dog ran from 46 Spofford Street and attacked them. Police did not specify the breed of the dog.

"Two female parties were attacked," Lt. Mark Murray of Newburyport police said. "One woman was bit in the left thigh, then the dog jumped on the other woman, knocking her to the ground."

Murray said the woman with the bite was transported via ambulance to Anna Jaques Hospital. Animal Control was notified at the time, and the dog was taken away to be quarantined for 10 days.

"According to Animal Control, they have dealt with this dog before for being unrestrained," Murray said.

The on-call Animal Control officer and the city's Health Department director Jack Morris did not immediately return calls yesterday seeking further information.
