GEORGETOWN — After several months of negotiations with the teachers union, the School Committee last week approved a three-year contract that will take effect Sept. 1.
Teachers will receive a 2 percent raise the first year and 2.75 percent raises the last two years of the contract, according to committee Chairman Anne Donahue.
At the Thursday meeting, committee member George Moker explained the terms of the contract, saying the teachers have agreed to give back on several items in order to achieve an agreement in tough economic times.
"The teachers have agreed to give up matching contributions to their 403B retirement funds; we have reduced department heads and freed up electives to allow students to take courses of interest with no further cost," Moker said.
Teacher steps, which enable teachers to earn more in salary for completing graduate coursework and advanced degrees, have also been reduced. "The steps have been reduced by 75 percent the first year, 50 percent the second year and will return to normal levels the third year," Moker said.
Teachers have also agreed to a comprehensive technology clause that requires more use of technology education in the regular classroom, which will aid in keeping administrative costs down, Moker added.
