Beach Center getting flowery face lift

Just in time for the arrival of summer, a team of local volunteers has begun a new beautification process to revive Salisbury Beach Center.

The new face lift brings a bevy of flowers and beach grasses in 17 new planters, colorful banners and newly configured benches and tables creating a park-like oasis on the Broadway Mall.

In addition, a permanent cut-through will be made between Southern and Northern boulevards, separating traffic and creating a pedestrian walkway from the Broadway Mall all the way to the sand and surf. A new Beachfront Bandstand for summer festival events and concerts will also be erected in place of the road later in June.

The Salisbury Beach Center Beautification effort is an initiative of the Salisbury Beach Partnership, the Town of Salisbury and the Salisbury Beach Betterment Association Beautification Committee, which helped pay for plant materials and assembled volunteers to help with the plantings.

Order Up A Garden Salisbury business owner Mary Ann Fitzgerald designed the Broadway Mall enhancement. A student in the Landscape Institute of the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University, Fitzgerald's design will help make the center a welcoming place for people to meet and relax, similar to community parks found in urban areas. Indigenous plants were selected to withstand the sun and wind, while adding color and attracting birds and butterflies.

Once funding is obtained, Phase II of the project that will include a game area and children's play area will be completed
