This Day in History

On this day in 1891, the schooner Lucy M. Collins, with a cargo of coal, bound for Ipswich from New York, was driven ashore near the southerly end of Plum Island. Over the years it became apparent that so much coal had been spilled, the Daily News published an article stating that “coal lines the bottom” of the river.
