---- — NEWBURYPORT — Picking cranberries and beach plums is a historical activity on Plum Island – an activity that continues today at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge.
Starting on Monday, Aug. 26, free permits will be available at refuge headquarters for those interested in picking beach plums and/or cranberries on the refuge. A total of 50 permits will be issued this year. The number of permits issued is based on the abundance and quality of the fruit. Permits will be issued on a first–come, first-served basis.
Berry collection season runs from Sept. 1 through Oct. 31. The headquarters is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Refuge headquarters is located at 6 Plum Island Turnpike in Newburyport. Those with further questions about berry collecting should contact the refuge at 978-465-5753.
