Reported carjacking under investigation

AMESBURY – Amesbury Police are investigating a reported carjacking in which an unknown assailant attempted to steal a newspaper deliveryman’s van at the Carriagetown Marketplace before crashing it into a tree and fleeing on foot.

The incident reportedly occurred at 11:39 p.m. on Monday near the western edge of the plaza’s parking lot by Acapulcos Mexican restaurant.

More than a half dozen officers, including a state police K-9 unit, responded to the scene, but the suspect could not be located and at this point no arrests have been made.

Amesbury Police Lt. Kevin Donovan said the police are still working to identify a suspect, but according to the operator of the vehicle, the person who tried to steal his car was a Hispanic male who was wearing a white and grey hooded sweatshirt and black pants at the time of the incident.

The incident occurred while the man was making a delivery to a Carriagetown Marketplace business, he said.

“The operator of the vehicle had gotten out and was making a newspaper delivery,” Donovan said. “And when he went back, he was approached by another party who yanked him out of the vehicle and drove away.”

The operator reportedly told police that, after being pulled from the vehicle, he held on to the suspect and caused him to crash the vehicle into a tree.

The suspect then fled towards McDonald’s, and police were unable to locate him after searching the area.

Police released few other details, saying the situation is still under investigation, but Donovan did confirm that the van suffered serious front damage from the crash but nobody was injured as a result.

Donovan added that there is no indication the public is in any danger, and while residents should always be aware of their surroundings late at night, there is no additional reason for concern.
