Fast start for Screening Room fundraising effort

NEWBURYPORT — Owners of the Screening Room say they have raised $15,000 in pledges in their effort to buy digital projection equipment.

Andrew Mungo, a co-founder, said that $60,000 must be raised to make the conversion.

“We have hit our first internal goal, 25 percent, on Kickstarter today,” said Mungo on Friday. “That is truly heartening. We are humbled.”

The 99-seat theater now uses 35mm film, but industry analysts say studios and distributors will soon be releasing product solely for digital projection units.

Organizers have scheduled a half-dozen fundraising gatherings in September, and recently added an event at The Grog featuring top local bands.

Mungo said that Parker Wheeler and his All-Star Band and the Henry Welch Band are scheduled to perform on Thursday, Sept. 19, from 7 to 11 p.m.

Cover charge is $10 and refunds will be accepted.
