---- — NEWBURYPORT — Helping hands are needed for a Little River Nature Trail Cleanup Party sponsored by the Parker River Clean Water Association on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers should park behind the Welcome to Newburyport sign near the Little River Nature Trail entrance. Bring gloves, clippers and loppers. Coffee, doughnuts and water will be available. Individuals and families with older children welcome. Garbage bags and trash pickers will be provided.

For more information, contact Jerry Mullins, 978-618-9154 or email indyjerry@hotmail.com. Inquiries about Parker River Clean Water Association and all they do to preserve this vital watershed should be directed to George Comiskey at 978-352-7364 or comgeorge1@comcast.net.

This activity will be held rain or shine.

The focus will be on several projects: the trimming of the nature trail, refreshing of trail markers and signs and the repair of the observation deck. Recently, the City Council voted to impose a ban on overnight parking on the Hale Street side of the trail due to illegal fires as well as broken glass on the bike path and vandalism to the observation deck.

The work on the nature trail and general cleanup is in anticipation of the Trails & Sails events of Sept. 21 of birding on the nature trail and a nature tour on the 28. These events will be held in conjunction with other events held throughout Essex County and in particular Newburyport on behest of the Essex National Heritage Commission.
