Screening Room at 75 percent of fundraising goal

NEWBURYPORT — Managers of the Screening Room film theater have raised close to $45,000, about 75 percent of its goal of $60,000 that they say they need to convert to digital projection equipment.

Co-owner Andrew Mungo is using an online application known as to generate pledges.

About 448 backers have pledged contributions, including an anonymous donor who promised to add $12,000 if it is matched by other individuals.

Mungo said that one woman from Texas who lived in Newburyport “for a short time when she was young” pledged $1,000.

A man from Port Chester, Wash., sent $100, saying that “theaters have an integral place in the downtown of vibrant communities.”

“The theater’s owners are astonished and awed,” said Mungo.

The veteran cinema owner said that an “in person” fundraiser will be held at the Grog restaurant tonight with several bands playing throughout the evening. It begins at 7, and a $10 donation is suggested.
