Kick-off today for Community United Methodist Church

Community United Methodist Church in Byfield will kick off their new year and vision for the future today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The day will feature free food, music and a bouncy house. There will be a chance to learn about Sunday School.

Bean Supper at St. James today

Events at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church

Blessing of Animals: Bring four-footed family members to be blessed under the protection of Sts. Modestos and Mamas at courtyard of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 7 Harris St., Newburyport, today at 5 p.m. All are welcome.

Interested in Icons?: A fall study, “Reading Icons,” will be held on Wednesdays from 7-8:30 p.m., beginning Wednesday. The group will be looking at the making and use of icons, and spending time looking at icons of Christ, Mary and the great Feasts to “read” the symbolism and message in them. Curious about Orthodoxy?: A fall study, “Introduction to Orthodoxy,” will be held on Thursdays from 7-8:30 p.m., beginning Thursday. The group will be discussing the fundamentals of the Orthodox faith, prayer, the Liturgy and Sacraments, the Saints and other topics.

Introduction to Meditation

The Insight Meditation Center of Newburyport will offer two Introduction to Insight Meditation events: an Intro class on Tuesday from 7-8:30 p.m. and a morning retreat for beginners on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. These are designed for anyone interested in Insight Meditation (Vipassana). Vipassana is a simple practice that steadies the mind by grounding attention in the present moment; it originated in the Buddhist tradition more than 2,500 years ago.
