Roundabout is driving me crazy

Newburyport Daily News

---- — To the editor:

Well, I can’t stand it any longer. I know, I know, give it a chance. Heck, it’s not even finished yet. You know what I’m talking about ... the roundabout! Or is it a rotary? I suppose if you’re my age you might even call it a traffic circle. Now don’t tell me I’m the only one screaming about how crazy this obstacle course seems to be.

I started writing this letter a couple weeks ago, but every time I drive through this maze I want to add something else to this letter. I’ve got to stop adding and get to the point. I have spent a little time on the computer researching the actual difference of a “rotary” vs. a “roundabout.” Even a piece in The Daily News referred to it six times as a rotary and six times as roundabout and even once a traffic circle, all in the same article.

Actually, it seems quite clear that a rotary is usually much larger (Portsmouth) in diameter than a roundabout. But here’s what got my attention. All the info I read basically said, “Because of the difference of speed entering a roundabout the accidents are less severe than that when entering a rotary.” Now that’s comforting!

No pulling punches here: I think this “rotary-rounda-circle” is nuts. Who the heck designed this? Do they have a driver’s license? Trucks with trailers, forget about it? Did they even think about snow plowing? (Just wait on that mess). So here’s my words of wisdom. If you’re thinking of getting into the business world, I suggest you open a tire shop that also does front-end alignments in Newburyport, Amesbury or Salisbury. You’ll be busy.

There ... that’s one more opinion off my chest.
