'Bell Ringers' needed for Salvation Army fundraiser

---- — NEWBURYPORT — The Salvation Army is looking for individuals and groups to help with its annual bell ringing fundraiser.

Every year, roughly 20 percent of the money that The Salvation Army uses to provide important services for area families in need is raised during the months of November and December during the Red Kettle campaign.

A small army of volunteers and workers rings bells at those iconic red pots outside of area stores collecting donations from passers-by. This tradition that began in the 1930s has since become synonymous with the season itself.

An open house is planned at The Newburyport Salvation Army, 40 Water St., on Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 3 to 6 p.m. At that time, applications will be available to fill several full and part-time temporary seasonal positions.
