Summer bazaar invites vendor participation
The Amesbury Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Foundation will be holding its annual Summer Bazaar on Saturday, July 2, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is inviting vendors to participate.
There will be plenty of events scheduled throughout downtown Amesbury. Live music and entertainment will be offered in the amphitheater in the Upper Millyard, as well as at various local businesses and vendors will fill Market Square.
Participating shops will be holding sidewalk sales on Friday, July 1 and Saturday, July 2.

Boy Scout Troop 7 holding Burger Burn
Boy Scouts from Newburyport and Amesbury who participate in Boy Scouts of America Troop 7 will hold a fundraising Burger Burn at Eastern Lumber on Route 110 in Amesbury. Made-to-order burgers and hot dogs will be available for a nominal donation starting at 9:30 a.m. through late afternoon. The Boy Scouts are raising funds for their troop activities, which include camp-outs, bike-and-hike outings and community service projects in Greater Newburyport area. Troop 7 most recently assisted the Amesbury Tree Committee by planting saplings throughout town. The Scouts will be marching in the Memorial Day parade at on Monday at 10 a.m. They will be in full uniform for the Burger Burn.
Lions Club offers Finger Lakes tour
The Amesbury Lions Club is offering a tour to the Finger Lakes with a stop at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. In the heart of the Finger Lakes lies one of the largest acreages of vineyards in the country with more than 160 wineries. Departs Thursday, Sept. 22 via motor coach from Amesbury. Henna tattoos for teens at library
Mandy Roberge will talk about the history of henna tattoos and also demonstrate the technique for teens on Monday, July 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Amesbury Public Library, 149 Main St. Teens will be able to have Roberge give them a tattoo or they can try it themselves. The program is open to teens in grades 7 through 12; registration is required. The program is funded by the Friends of Amesbury Public Library. Junior Church Basketball Clinic on tap
Market Street Baptist Church will host a three-day Junior Church Basketball Clinic on Monday through Wednesday, June 26 through 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Cashman Elementary School. The clinic for girls and boys ages 5 to 13 is a noncompetitive, instructional program designed to teach fundamental basketball skills and basic Bible knowledge in a fun and engaging manner. A visiting youth group from Tennessee will be working with the church as well as local church members. A suggested donation of $10 per child is requested to cover costs. Think green — think golf
The Amesbury Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Foundation will be holding its 22nd annual Golf Tournament on Monday, June 6, at the Links at Outlook, South Berwick, Maine. This year's tournament will be a four-person scramble.
There will be a player fee of $185, which includes greens fees, cart fees, putting contest, hole in one contest, beat the pro contest, mulligans, boxed lunch, buffet dinner and prizes.
Sponsorships start at $175, and all sponsors will be featured in publicity and promotional notices and be listed on the Chamber website.

Donations wanted
The Amesbury High School All Sports Booster Club will be selling "Welcome Gift Packs" to incoming freshmen beginning in late April and throughout the spring. The booster club is inviting local businesses to donate either goods, services, coupons or other items that highlight their business and would be useful to incoming students. The gift pack will include an AHS backpack loaded with school supplies and other items that will come in handy for high school students. Some of the items that they would like to include are drink bottles, flash drives, pens, pencils, calendar/appointment keepers and AHS Cafeteria Coupons. The gift pack will be sold for $25 and proceeds will benefit the athletic programs at AHS. Veterans services seeks drivers
Say thank-you to area veterans by signing up as a volunteer driver. Many veterans have out-of-town medical appointments, which require transport to Bedford and Boston. By enrolling in the Northern Essex Elder Transport, you can become qualified to provide this service for our local heroes. Drivers are required to use their own vehicles, are reimbursed 43 cents a mile and are provided with supplemental insurance. Contact Cathy Fairchild at 978-388-7474.

Amesbury Lions Club sponsors trips
The Amesbury Lions Club will be sponsoring three trips in 2011. Two trips will be to Red Sox away games in Toronto and Baltimore respectively, and the third trip will be a bus tour of the Finger Lakes Region of New York. A brief synopsis of each trip and prices are included below.
Boston Red Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays in Toronto, June 9 to 12. This trip is four days, three nights with hotel accommodations at the Days Inn and Suites in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Trip includes all transportation via motor coach. Passports are required for this trip. Prices are: $549 pp/ double, $539pp/ triple, $699 single, $439 child with full rate adult.
Boston Red Sox vs. Baltimore Orioles in Baltimore, July 18 to 20. This trip is three days and two nights with accommodations at the Residence Inn by Marriott, two blocks from the Inner Harbor and within walking distance of the ballpark. Tickets will be supplied for the 7:15 p.m. start time game in the lower box seats. Prices are $450 per person/double, $440 triple, $640 single and $340 child with full rate adult.
Tour the Finger Lakes Region in New York Sept. 22 to 25. Accommodations will be in the Ramada on the lake in Geneva, New York. The tour will include visits to Cooperstown at the Baseball Hall of Fame, The Willard Chapel, Belhurst Castle, Smith Opera House, Sonnenberg Mansion and the Corning Museum of Glass for a guided tour, and much more. Prices are $659 per person/double, $629 triple, $829 single. Space is limited to 48 passengers.

Volunteer drivers needed
Northern Essex Elder Transport, Inc. is a non-profit volunteer program serving the elderly in 14 communities of the Merrimack Valley, is seeking volunteer drivers. Volunteer drivers provide door-to-door transportation for the elderly to local and out of town medical appointments, essential shopping and social interaction when other means are either unavailable or unaffordable. Drivers donate their time and use their own automobiles and are reimbursed 43 cents per mile, and are provided supplemental insurance. Volunteers are given an emergency procedures course instructing them on what to do "if" an emergency arises. Volunteers needed to maintain flags at cemeteries
Veterans Services of Amesbury is seeking volunteers to maintain the flags at local cemeteries throughout the year. The maintenance of flags is a continual effort, and success is dependent on community volunteers. Volunteers are needed for Union, Mt. Prospect and St. Joseph's cemeteries. Lake Gardner Association's first annual photo contest
The Lake Gardner Improvement Association, in association with the Amesbury Public Library, is inviting the public to participate in its first photo contest. Help raise awareness of Lake Gardner, the Powow River and surrounding conservation land by submitting photos online. Prizes will be awarded, and top entries will go on display at Amesbury Public Library. Photos should be on the theme of Lake Gardner, the beach, the Powow River or surrounding conservation land. Finalists will be chosen by judges on basis of technical quality, artistic creativity and composition. Preschool movie time at the library
A 30-minute movie based on a picture book will be shown at the library, followed by a short craft on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m., at the Amesbury Public Library, 149 Main St., through June 9. Julie Pike Edmond will run a free workshop for children ages 3 to 5 in creative and fun movement. Kids can explore different ways to move while getting out some wiggles. Local veteran service agents are seeking volunteers with prior military service to visit with veterans in their homes and in hospice. Rowing lessons for kids
Kids between 10 and 12 will have the opportunity this summer to learn how to row a boat. Lowell's Boat Shop is offering two one-week sessions in July by certified instructors to learn traditional rowing command, how to plan a trip on the water, basic marine safety, basic navigation and teamwork. Also, kids can learn to appreciate nature, wildlife and the history that surrounds them, according to nonprofit working museum and national landmark.
The five-day program begins and ends each day at Lowell's Boat Shop and is geared toward teaching students proficiency on the water, self-reliance and confidence. The program will take place daily from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The first session runs from July 11 to 15 and the second one runs from July 18 to 22. There is a minimum of 10 students for a session and a maximum of 20. The cost is $285 per session. There is a 10 percent discount for families with crew membership.

Fundraiser for cancer walk
A fundraiser will be held on June 11 at the Polish Club on Mill Street to benefit the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life in August. Amesbury resident Tammi Perkins is team captain is hosting the fundraiser, which begins at 7 p.m. Live entertainment will be provided by the Reuban Kincaid Project. The group is walking in memory of Tom Francoeur. There will be a silent auction. Donations requested at $10 per person. Proceeds from the event will go towards the American Cancer Soceity. Lesley University information meeting
On Friday, June 3, at 5:15 p.m., or Saturday, June 4, at 10 a.m., Amesbury High, 5 Highland St, is holding a meeting on how to obtain an education license to teach moderate special needs children in grades Pre K through 8. Attendees need to possess an initial license in early childhood elementary education or middle school to obtain this second license. 'My Fair Lady' trip
Several groups are organizing a trip to North Shore Music Theatre on June 8 to see the musical, "My Fair Lady." The Newburyport Gold Agers and the Newburyport and Amesbury councils on aging are organizing the trip. Tickets costs $65 are they are limited. The price of the ticket includes transportation from Elks Hall in Newburyport to the theatre in Beverly. The bus leaves at 12:30 p.m. for the 2 p.m. matinee. Foxwoods Trip
The Amesbury Council on Aging is organizing a trip to Foxwoods Casino on May 26. The cost of the ticket is $30 per person and includes transportation and a casino package. Sparhawk School will be 'Singin' in the Rain'
Tickets are on sale for Sparhawk School's production of "Singin' in the Rain." The feel-good musical takes audiences back to a decade of flappers, tappers and romance when silent film stars had to learn how to talk into the mikes and villains always wore masks. Performances will be Sunday and Monday, June 10 and 11, at 7:30 p.m.; and Tuesday, June 12, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door.
Coastal Trails Coalition fundraiser
The Coastal Trails Coalition will be holding a fundraiser at Flatbread Co., 5 Market Square, on Tuesday, June 7, from 5 to 9 p.m. A portion of the price for each pizza ordered, both eat-in and take-out, will be donated to the CTC. A raffle for a Bell bicycle trailer is also part of the event. Raffle tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. Winners will be drawn at 9 p.m. at Flatbread. The ticket-holder does not need to be present to win.
The Coastal Trails Coalition is an all-volunteer organization composed of citizens and communities in the Lower Merrimack Valley whose mission is to advocate for the Coastal Trails Network, an emerging 30-mile, public system of bicycle and pedestrian trails linking the unique coastal features, town centers, neighborhoods and transportation hubs in the communities of Amesbury, Newbury, Newburyport and Salisbury. All funds raised will be used for trail development and maintenance.
Peace with a cherry on top at Friendly's
Kids As Peacemakers is hosting Family Fun Nights in May at Friendly's Ice Cream at 111 Macy St. (Route 110) in Amesbury to celebrate Peace Month in Massachusetts. The public is invited to be a peacemaker by helping to create a peace mural at the restaurant. Teen summer reading program
The Amesbury Public Library Manga Club, 149 Main St., is participating in a postcard project that has teens from across the United States and Canada swapping postcards. This year the theme for the teen summer reading program is "You Are Here."
The teens are reading for Lucy's Love Bus, and they provide funding for any form of integrative therapy to children fighting cancer or living with late effects of cancer treatment.
The sign-up for the teen summer reading program starts on June 1 and continues through Aug. 12. Teens may sign up for the summer reading program on line at www.readsinma.org/amesbury and then click on teens. After registration, they can keep track of all the books that were read and write reviews.
The teen programs have been funded by The Friends of the Amesbury Public Library and Amesbury Youth Funding. 'You Are Here' is sponsored by your local library, the Massachusetts Library System, the Boston Bruins, and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.
Amesbury native to speak on Memorial Day
Cmdr. Glen D. Bourque, executive officer, NAVSTA Newport, will speak at the Memorial Day ceremony in Amesbury at 10:15 a.m. at Landry Field. The observance is sponsored by Veterans of Foreign War Richard F. O'Brien Post 2016.
A native of Amesbury, Bourque graduated from Amesbury High School in 1980. He entered the Navy in February 1980 (under the delayed entry program), went to boot camp in September 1980 and graduated from basic training at Recruit Training Command (RTC), Great Lakes, Ill., in December 1980.
'Cooking with Katie' for kids at library
Katie Wilton Peterson will present her "Cooking with Katie" class for children ages 9 to 14 on Wednesday, July 13, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Amesbury Public Library, 149 Main St. Parmesan pizza triangles, pizza wontons and cream cheese-filled strawberries will be among the items on the menu. The hands-on workshop represents Peterson's second visit to the library. The workshop is part of the Teen Summer Reading Program and is being supported by Amesbury Youth Funding. At least 15 participants must register for the workshop for it to be held. Veteran benefit seminar
Are you the veteran or the widow of a veteran? Are you concerned about long-term care costs? Cultural Council seeking new members
The Amesbury Cultural Council is looking for volunteers to serve on the board. The council's goal is to help foster and promote the cultural enjoyment and enrichment of citizens through local and regional arts and culture events and programs.
