Kids read 1,455 books in summer program

The summer reading program at the town library may have come to a close, but the knowledge gathered by its 140 participants opening and reading 1,455 books will remain a learning experience forever.

"With the theme of Go Green @ Your Library, this year's readers learned a lot about what it means to 'be green' and how their efforts can help to improve our environment and our world," said Hermayne Gordon, the children's librarian who coordinated the program. "It was exciting to see many familiar faces, as well as many new ones at our events and programs. Hearty congratulations go out to all those who participated in summer reading, achieving and surpassing their goals."

Gordon noted that all of the group's programs and activities focused on the Go Green theme, and terms such as reduce, reuse and recycle became very familiar to participants. In addition, recyclable materials were used in all of the craft projects completed.

"A special thank-you goes out to the Friends of the Rowley Public Library, without whom we would be unable to offer the high-quality programming that we do," Gordon said. "They have been extremely generous and supportive."

Colorful collages by local artist e. Tobin Eckian decorate the gallery at the Rowley Public Library for the month of September. Eckian's work involves photographing recent drawings and combining them in a digital painting program, then making prints, doing more collage and then working with acrylics to create light, playful images. "My art is about staying sane and connected to oneself in a world seemingly gone haywire. While creating, I aim to maintain my sense of humor about things and keep my energy intact, and my joy sustained, and I hopefully paint in a buoyancy that is easily transferred to the viewer," said Eckian. For more information, visit www.TobinEckian.com or call the library at 978-948-2850.
