John O'Keefe


Seabrook Beach, NH — John E. O’Keefe, 94, died on June 3, 2013, at Treasure Coast Hospice in Stuart, Fla. He was born on September 9, 1918, in Lawrence, Mass., son of the late James and Alice (McGoldrick) O’Keefe. John grew up in Lawrence and graduated from Lawrence High School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for the 3rd Marine Construction Division in the South Pacific during WWII.

A former longtime resident of Seabrook Beach, N.H., John was most recently of Kensington, N.H., and Jensen Beach, Fla.

During the 1950s to 1960s, he was the owner and operator of Merrimack Jewelry Co., which was located on Franklin St., in Lawrence. In 1964, John founded O’Keefe General Store in Seabrook Beach, where he worked until his retirement in 1981. John was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus in Methuen, Mass. In his later years, he enjoyed frequenting thrift shops in the Jensen Beach area in search of unique items for his collections or to share with his family and friends. John loved spending his time socializing with friends and family at the family-owned Round Rock Restaurant in Seabrook Beach, N.H.

John was predeceased by his wife, Marion (McGurren) O’Keefe; one son, Kevin J. O’Keefe; and a grandson, Robert A. O’Keefe Jr. He is survived by five sons, John E. O’Keefe Jr. of Jensen Beach, Robert A. O’Keefe Sr. and wife, Lorraine, of Kensington, N.H., Michael G. O’Keefe of Jensen Beach, Martin J. O’Keefe and wife, Kristin, of Jensen Beach, Peter J. O’Keefe and wife, Lisa, of Rohnert Park, Calif.; two daughters, Patricia M. O’Keefe and companion, Richard Donovan, of Hampton, N.H., Brigid O’Keefe Hensley and husband, Clyde, of Jensen Beach; one daughter-in-law, Janet P. O’Keefe of N. Hampton, N.H.; six grandchildren, Mollie O’Keefe Newton and husband, David, Marina Hensley, Conor O’Keefe, Aidan O’Keefe, Griffin O’Keefe, and Ethan O’Keefe; one sister, Katherine Levis of N. Andover; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give special thanks to John’s son, Michael, who was his devoted caregiver for the last years of his life.

ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours will be Friday, June 7, 2013, from 4 to 7p.m., at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, N.H. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 10 a.m., at St. Elizabeth Church, 1 Lowell St., Seabrook, N.H. Burial will follow in Village Cemetery in Kensington, N.H.
