Jeanette R. Chatigny, 89


Haverhill, MA — Jeanette Ruth (Whiting) Chatigny of Newburyport, passed on June 4, 2013. She was lovingly cared for with dignity by the staff at the Wingate in Haverhill since Sept. 2009.

Jeanette was born December 20, 1923, in Rockland, Mass., to the late Ralph E. Whiting and the late Ebba (Anderson) Whiting. She was a graduate of Newburyport High School, Class of 1941, and a graduate of M. Fazio Institute of Beauty Culture in 1970.

Jeanette was a proud mother of her six children and fully participated in their lives. When her children reached high school, she ventured out to various jobs at Western Electric, Mammoth Mart as its Snack Bar Manager and also Hoyt’s Drug Store. She also managed a candy store on Pleasant Street in Newburyport.

After graduating from hairdressing school and completing her internship, she opened Harmony Hairdo’s in the 1970s on High Street in Newburyport.

Jeanette sang with the Sweet Adelines for 13 years and they competed in many competitions. Jeanette had studied with Mrs. Clark, High Street, Newburyport for many years. Jeanette was gifted with a remarkable true tone and often sang with the Dick Creeden Quartet at the Sportsmen Lodge. Jeanette also won two championships on Community Auditions with Dave Maynard. She enjoyed singing at clubs throughout the area in a trio with her close friend, the late Sam Blaisdell.

She was a devoted follower of many local and NH jazz groups including Paul Broadnax, the late Tom Gallant as well as our very own Les Harris, Sr., Les Harris, Jr. and the Memorial All-Stars.

Jeanette had a great devotion to Newburyport since her family’s move in 1938 and besides her reunion activities, she was an avid fan of NHS football and attended games at home and away. She became an active member of the NHS Alumni Association where she was chairwoman of the Faculty Tea Reception and Scholarship Committee member.

Jeanette was honored to be nominated and selected Senior Queen of our Elderly Citizens during the 2001 Yankee Homecoming festivities.

Jeanette is survived by daughters, Joanne Baron and husband, Andy, Diane Chatigny, Coreen Leavitt-O’Brien, Jeanne Elicone and husband, Jack, Michele Chernick and husband, David, and son, Wilfred (Bill) Chatigny, Jr. and wife, Mary. She was also the mother of the late Alan Francis who died in 1949.

In addition to her late parents, she was the sister of the late Beatrice Matheson. Other surviving relatives include 10 grandsons, Michael and Keith Leavitt, Nathan and Matthew Chatigny, Stephen and Paul Elicone, Craig and Eric Chernick, Stephen and Dan O’Brien, and two granddaughters, Nicole George and Allysa Chatigny, as well as several nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.

ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours will be held Saturday, June 8, 2013, from 10 a.m. to noon, at E.V. Jutras Funeral Home, 118 Friend St., Amesbury, MA, followed by a memorial service.
