Newburyport, MA and Wapiti, WY — After a five-year battle with cancer, Andrew Balkus passed peaceably in his sleep with Sharon, his devoted wife of 22 years, at his side.
Born in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1943 and raised in Lynn, Mass., he graduated from Lynn English in 1961. A consummate optimist and lover of life, he always had a warm smile and big hug for all. His beginnings as a truck driver after high school grew into an international aviation career that spanned more than 30 years with Northwest Airlines. Retiring as a Wide Body DC-10 Captain, his adventuring continued on the SV “Its Good,” with more than a decade of cruising the Caribbean Islands and the coast of South America with his wife. A deep devotion to family and friends allowed for many special times at home and abroad for his children and grandchildren. Andy is deeply loved and will be missed by his wife, Sharon; brother, William; sister, Judy; sons, Dan and Brad; Brad’s wife, Kara; grandchildren, Madelyn and Andrew; and countless friends and family.
