North Andover — Cpt. James F. Coen, Sr. USCG (Ret), 84, of North Andover, passed away peacefully Friday, December 6, 2013, at The Garden View at Edgewood, surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born in Newburyport, MA and was the son of the late Walter P. and Catherine (McMahon) Coen, and the widower of E. Marie (Coletti) Coen.
Jim was raised and educated in Newburyport and enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1946 where he rose through the ranks and served on major vessels throughout the country and also was an Associate Professor at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy for several years, and enjoyed over 36 years with the Guard and retired in 1983 at the rank of Captain. Following his successful service career Jim had a very successful career working in the Banking industry in the Southern New Hampshire area for the next 15 years before retiring. Jim was very active in the community throughout his life, he was a member of the Salem Chamber of Commerce, was a 4th degree Knight of Columbus in Salem, NH, and the Pelham Business Network.
He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Coen-Coder and her husband, Carl Coder, of No. Andover; his son, James F. Coen, Jr. and his wife, Catherine Zerba, of Atkinson, NH; his grandchildren, James F. Coen, III and Jennifer Coen. He also is survived by his sister, Loretta McGrail of Framingham, MA, as well as nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral Services and Burial with full Military Honors at New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH will be Private at the request of the Family. Arrangements have been entrusted to Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen.
