Dover, NH — Roland L. Blake, 87, of Dover, formerly of Hampton and Stratham, died on Friday, January 3, 2014, at the Riverside Rest Home in Dover, where he has resided for the last 5 years.
Mr. Blake was born in Amesbury, Mass., on February 8, 1926, and was a son of the late Roland L. and Mildred (Randall) Blake.
Roland was raised in Amesbury, and graduated from Amesbury High School, Class of 1944, and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After his discharge from the service, he worked as an upholsterer with his father at R.L Blake and Son Furniture in Amesbury, later expanding the business to include sales of new furniture. He also taught upholstering classes at Haverhill Trade School, Haverhill, Mass., during the 1950s.
He and his late wife, A. Lorraine Blake, who died in 2011, were married in 1948, and spent over 63 years together. The family summered at Plaice Cove in Hampton Beach for years before permanently settling in Hampton in 1968, and eventually to Stratham in 1985. Roland was an avid gardener and loved fishing and boating. He loved to tell stories. Boasting of his ride from Amesbury to the top of Mt. Washington on his bicycle was one of his favorites.
He is survived by his daughter, Holly Blake of Stratham; two nephews; and many cousins including, Sally (Blake) Lavery of Exeter; additionally, the staff of Riverside Rest Home, who were not only caregivers, but a much appreciated extended family.
ARRANGEMENTS: There will be no visiting hours. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m., on Wednesday, January 8, in the Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody, Mass. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Riverside Rest Home Staff Appreciation Fund, 276 County Farm Road, Dover, NH 03820. Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.
