Julienne H. Auffrey, 101

Amesbury, MA — Julienne H. (LaBatte) Auffrey, 101 years old of Amesbury Mass., died peacefully on January 9, 2014, at Amesbury Village Nursing home, with family by her side. She was born on April 7, 1912, in Amesbury, and was the daughter of Antoine and Alma LaBatte. She was raised and educated in Amesbury, where she was a lifelong resident. Julienne was a matriarch, a selfless giver with a quick witted sense of humor that never showed her age. She worked at the Portsmouth Navy Yard during WWII, and retired from The Bailey Co. after many years. She enjoyed quilting, crafts, bingo, line dancing, community activities, traveling, and most importantly, spending time with her family. Julienne was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Her warmhearted personality and compassionate nature was embraced by all, and will be greatly missed.

She was predeceased by her husband, Alyre Auffrey; three sisters; three brothers; son, Robert Auffrey; daughter-in-law, Jeanette Auffrey; and great-great-grandchild, Wyatt Auffrey.

Surviving family members include her son, Norman Auffrey and wife, Dorothy; daughter, Diane Methot and husband, Jean; daughter in-law, Lillian Auffrey; 10 grandchildren, Karen Jenkins and husband, Wendall, Danielle Hawkes, Robert Auffrey Jr. and wife, Teresa, Gregory Auffrey and wife, Dede, Deidre McCarty and husband, Everett, Alicia Richardson and husband, Randy, Brenda Auffrey, Denise Stamatis and husband, Bill, Dale Winch and wife, Amanda, and Dana Dube and husband, Mike; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Julienne’s family wishes to thank the Aides of Elders Affairs at the Heritage Towers and the staff at Amesbury Village Nursing home for the attentive, loving and compassionate care given to Julienne and her family during her stay.

ARRANGEMENTS: Services will be on Wednesday, January 15, with calling hours from 8:30 to 10 a.m., at the E.V. Jutras & Sons Funeral Home, 118 Friend St., Amesbury. Her funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m., at The Holy Family Parish Church 2 School St., Amesbury ,with burial to follow at Saint Joseph’s Cemetery.

A versatile athlete, she was a competitive swimmer and tennis player. Molly loved gardening, a passion she pursued both professionally and personally. She worked as a floral designer and an Associate of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Class of 2012.

    Bartow, FL — "You can't have L O V E without L E O" Leo J.Gagnon “Pepe," 79, of Bartow, Fla., passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014, with his loving wife, Sandy by his side. Leo was born on June 13, 1934 in Newburyport, Mass. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving proudly on the USS Forrestal during the Korean War, forgoing graduation, at 17-years-old. Following the tradition of his uncles, he took on employment at Towle Silversmiths in Newburyport. Mr. Gagnon retired from the Newburyport Department of Public Works. He and his wife took great enjoyment as Owner/Operators of the former Port Bowling Lanes on Storey Avenue, getting to know and having positive influence on many of the local youth. Most will remember him for his sense of humor, warm welcoming smile, and the twinkle in his eyes. Leo was a member the American Legion Post #150 in Newburyport and Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Bartow, Fla. In his retirement, he was an avid bowler, a regular participant in Relay for Life in Bartow and took great pride routing for his New England sports teams, particularly the Red Sox and Patriots.

He served in the U.S. Army in the 1970s as a ski instructor in Garmisch, Germany, and was an avid skier throughout his life, spending many winter weekends in recent years collecting ski-racing medals at the Ski Wheelers Ski Club in North Conway, N.H.
