Amesbury, MA — Robert H. DeLong Jr., a lifelong Amesbury resident, passed away at Lahey Clinic in Burlington after a brief illness. He was born in Amesbury and was the son of the late Robert Sr. and Marie (April) Delong. He was the husband of the late Shirley (Leonard) DeLong who passed away in 2001.
He attended Haverhill Trade School and went on to establish DeLong Auto Body on Elm St. in Amesbury. He expanded the business and opened Amesbury Coach, selling used cars at the Elm St. location. For many years he was an active member and past president of the Amesbury Lions Club. He was an auto enthusiast and there wasn't anything having to do with a car he couldn't fix. He loved drag racing and was a member of both the Drag Masters and the Cam Snappers. He often enjoyed attending car shows and auctions and any event that was auto related. He enjoyed summers at Sandy Point at Lake Winnipesaukee, winters in Aruba, and traveling all over. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and he will be missed by them.
He is survived by his two sons, Stephen DeLong and his wife, Cheryl, and Jeffrey DeLong and his wife, Jennifer, all of Amesbury; his sister, Beverly DeLong and her companion, Walter Silva, of Amesbury; 5 grandchildren, Seth, Olivia, and Parker DeLong, and John and Jordan Bennett; his dear companion, Sylvie Perreault; and many friends.
ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, April 7, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. in the Holy Family Parish Church, 2 School St., in Amesbury, followed by burial in Mt. Prospect Cemetery. Calling hours at the E.V. Jutras & Sons Funeral Home, 118 Friend St., in Amesbury, are Sunday, April 6, from 3 to 6 p.m. The Amesbury Lions Club will meet at 2:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
