Newburyport — Neal A. Ernstrom, an award winning New England news photographer, a graduate of Triton Regional High School and Westfield State College and lifetime resident of the Newburyport area, passed away suddenly last Thursday. He was 37.
Neal worked as the news photographer for Boston’s Channel 7 WHDH-TV for the last ten years. Prior to WHDH, Neal worked for WCVB-TV in Boston as a news courier then as news photographer for WMUR-TV in Manchester, NH. During his five-year tenure at WMUR, Neal received a photojournalism award for his coverage of the search and rescue of a lost White Mountain hiker. At WHDH, he received a Boston-New England Emmy Award nomination for his filming of a scientific expedition that researched the recent offshore sightings of great white sharks.
In addition to his news photography, he used his camera and his artistic eye to capture the beauty of his beloved Newburyport and Plum Island. But his most loved subject matter was his pride and joy, his two-year-old twin daughters.
A loving father, husband, son, brother, and friend, Neal is survived by his parents, Joyce and Gerry; his wife, Erin; his daughters, Ellery and Elisabeth; his brother, Glen and half brother, Eric.
