Wellborn, FL — Raymond J. Bastarache, Sr., formerly of Merrimac, Mass., died on August 27, 2013, at the University of Florida Shands Hospital from complications following heart surgery. He was born in Lynn, Mass., to Omer and Dorothy (Higgins) Bastarache, the oldest of 4 children.
A graduate of Haverhill Trade School, he achieved his electrician’s degree, and later became an Electrical teacher at Whittier Regional Vocational High School. After teaching he worked for the Merrimac Light and Water Company, Middleton Electric Company and finally retired from the Peabody Electric Company.
Ray was a Captain in the Army National Guard for many years until his honorable discharge. Ray was also a member of the Merrimac Fire and Police Department for many years. During his time in Florida he became active with the Knights of Columbus.
Raymond was preceded in death by his wife of 25 years, Joyce A. (Bradley) Bastarache, his son, James Michael and his parents. He is survived by his wife, Laura Mae (Sandner) Bastarache of Wellborn, Fla., (formerly of Haverhill); his son, Raymond J. Bastarache, Jr.; daughter, Joyce A. (Bastarache) Amidio and her husband, Joseph; his grandchildren, Ashley (Credit) Borges of Salem, N.H., Ariana (Howes) Hazen of Rowley, Mass., Alecia Howes of Ipswich, Mass.; Inge (Bastarache) Wertz of Winder, Ga., Kayla Bastarache of Ipswich, Mass., Brooke Bastarache of Tampa, Fla., Brandon Bastarache of Newton; his brothers, Laurie Bastarache, Michael Bastarache and his sister, Eliene (Bastarache) Brooks and her husband, Wayne; as well as four great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.
He touched many lives and will be sadly missed.
ARRANGEMENTS: A memorial service for family and friends will be held at 11 a.m., September 21, 2013, at the Church of the Nativity, 4 Green St., Merrimac, Mass.
