Ethel Bartz Poor, 80, of Traverse City, passed away on March 5, 2012, at Munson Hospice House. She was born Ethel Barbara Rowe July 11, 1931, on Ring's Island, Mass., to the late George and Florence (Garand) Rowe.
Ethel graduated from Butterworth School of Nursing in 1952.
During her psychiatric rotation at Traverse City State Hospital, she met William Robert Bartz. Ethel and William married Sept. 21, 1952.
After working many years as a nurse at Munson Medical Center, she returned to the classroom, and in 1976, she graduated with a master's degree in clinical psychology from Central Michigan University. Her passion was working with children and families. She was a 20-year participant in the Harvard Nurse's Health Study.
Ethel was a voracious reader. She weekly completed the New York Times crossword puzzle. She also excelled in Free Cell and Mahjong. She loved singing with The Traverse City Presbyterian Church choir. She was a member of the Soup Group, women who met monthly to eat soup and play dominoes. She could never drive by a garage sale without stopping!
Oct. 26, 2006, Ethel married Henry Poor. They met in Newburyport, Mass., at a senior citizen group, the Third Alarmer's. Ethel and Hank split their time between Michigan and Massachusetts. They both loved water, the ocean and Grand Traverse Bay.
Ethel will be missed by her children, Brenda Bartz, Bruce (Amy) Bartz and Brent Bartz; husband, Henry Poor; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, all of Traverse City; and sister, Susan Smith of New Hampshire.
Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Jean Waterman; and her first husband, William Bartz.
A funeral service was held on March 8, 2012, at The Presbyterian Church.
Thank you goes out to the staff of the Oncology Unit at Munson, Dr. David Gordon and staff, and Munson Hospice House. Special acknowledgment is extended for support to Ethel and family from the Rev. Becky Chamberlain and the choir of the Presbyterian Church.
