Newburyport, MA — Ruth (Smith) Hardeman, age 80, longtime Newburyport resident, died early Sunday morning, February 3, 2013 at the Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport, surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of the late Willie D. Hardeman, who died November 13, 1997.
Born in Newburyport, September 25, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Arthur L. J. and Ruth (Mitchell) Smith and was a graduate of Newburyport High School.
For many years Ruth worked as an executive secretary for the Blue Cross and Blue Shield office in Boston.
Ruth was a long time member of the Elizabeth H. Whittier Club in Amesbury, member of the Newburyport Golden Age Club, serving as both president and vice president, a volunteer at the Anna Jaques Hospital, and a member of the Hope Community Church Choir. She was an accomplished organist and pianist as well as an accomplished seamstress and could do some real fancy footwork as an avid roller skater. She was also involved in many variety shows and musicals as a vocalist that were put on by members of St. Joseph Church, in Amesbury. Above all else, she was devoted to her family.
Her survivors include her two sons, Gordon Smith and wife Maria of Newmarket, NH and Paul Smith of Amesbury; her daughter, Ann Smith-Zannini of Amesbury; her six grandchildren, who were the love of her life, Amy, Lisa, Emma, Madison, Sarah and Hannah; her great-granddaughter, Makenna; her brother, Arthur L. J. Smith, Jr.; the father of her children, Howard Smith; her companion, Charlie, along with several nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours at the Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport, will be Thursday, February 7, 2013 from 6 to 8 P.M. Funeral services and interment in Highland Cemetery, Newburyport will be private for the family.
