Greenacres, Fla. — She was born and raised in Amesbury, a graduate of Amesbury High School, class of 1940. She left Amesbury to join the U.S. Navy and became a WAVE.
During that time, she met her future husband, Donald Nelson Sr. and they married in 1946 while they both served their country. She and Donald moved to Florida in 1956. In 1978, she began to work at the Atlantis Golf Club, retiring from there in 1987. Mabel was a member of the Crafting Club at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in West Palm Beach. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald M. Nelson, in 2005; her brother, Thomas Hodge, and sisters, Catherine Hodge, Ruth Murphy, Margaret Bailey, and Doris Hodge; and her parents, Mabel Inez Talbot and Peter Thomas Hodge. Her survivors include seven children, Nancy (Stanley) Dabrowski of Boca Raton, Donna Fletcher of Wellington, Peter (Suzi) Nelson of Palm Beach Gardens, Donald (Cheryl) Nelson Jr. of Coral Springs, Eric (Connie) Nelson Sr. of Seffner, Faye (Joe) Vidulich of Port Charlotte, and Glenn (Linda) Nelson of Boynton Beach. She also leaves to cherish her memory 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law, Lily Hodge of Amesbury; and brother-in-law, Dr. Leonard (Rita) Nelson of Charleston, W.V.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: Her family will receive friends on Saturday, Dec. 8, at the funeral home, between 1 and 2 p.m. Mabel's life will then be celebrated at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. She will then be laid to rest immediately following at Lake Worth Memory Gardens.
