Thornton 'Tom' E. Johnston

Newbury, MA — Thornton “Tom” E. Johnston, of Placida, Fla., and Newbury, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill, surrounded by his family.

Born in Milford, Maine, on September 27, 1925, he was the son of the late Loren and Geneva (Dunphy) Johnston. He graduated from Old Town High School and the University of Maine.

He was a proud veteran of World War II and the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army.

As an insurance analyst, Tom pursued a 32-year career with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., first in New York City and then for many years in Manchester, N.H.

Tom was an avid Boston Red Sox fan his whole life and rarely missed a chance to catch their broadcast. Tom was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, initially in Old Town.

In his retirement, Tom and his wife moved to Placida, enjoying their winter months there, and then returned to their home at Plum Island in Newbury. Over the years, Tom and Joan vacationed in many countries and locales, visiting historical sites.

His family, who loved him so dearly, includes his wife, Joan (Hilchey) Johnston of Placida; his sons, Steve Johnston and wife, Patricia, of Niskayuna, N.Y., and Mark Johnston and wife, Debra, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and his daughter, Gail Poirier of Pleasanton, Calif.; his seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his sister, Kay Conway and husband, Will, of Waterville, Maine; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son-in-law, Daniel Poirier.

ARRANGEMENTS: Services for the family will take place at a later time in Placida, Fla. Local arrangements are by the Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport.
