Groveland — Norman Harry Baker, 89, of Haverhill, and formerly of Groveland, died Thursday, May 22, at his residence.
He was born in Montreal on September 18, 1924, and was the only child of the late Fredrick J. and Alberta (Seagreve) Baker. He was educated in the Somerville School System, graduating from Somerville High School, Class of 1942.
After graduation, Norman joined the Navy, serving our country in WWII. After his honorable discharge, he attended Franklin Technology College. He was employed at AT&T for 37 years prior to his retirement.
In 1950, he moved to West Newbury, and in 1957, settled in Groveland. He became very involved in the Groveland Congregational Church United Church of Christ, and participating in the choir for 52 years. He had been a member of the Charles C. Dame Lodge A.F. & A.M. for over 55 years, and a 31-year member of the Scottish Rite 32nd Degree, a 55-year member of the American Legion, a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society, a volunteer at the Red Cross, and was a Scout Master in both Groveland and Georgetown. Some of his hobbies included Ham Radios, golf with Coleman Lee, square dancing with the Barnstormers, and round dancing.
Mr. Baker was predeceased by his loving wife, Doris Katherine (Hermann) Baker, who passed away in 2003; and a grandson, R. Thomas Smith III, who passed away in 2001.
He is survived by his loving children, Linda Baker and her husband, Alan, of West Newfield, Maine, Stephen and his wife, Susan Baker of Haverhill, Kathy Baker Smith and her partner, Dana Norton of Amesbury, Ronald Baker and his wife, Sonya, of Haverhill, and Jeff Baker and his partner, Debra Carmody of Worcester; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend calling hours on Tuesday, May 27, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Bradford Funeral Home, 210 South Main St., Route 125, Bradford. A Masonic Service will be at 6 p.m. His funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 28, at 9 a.m., at Groveland Congregational Church, 4 King St., Groveland.
