Brentwood, NH — Esther Sutherland Thompson (Towne), 103, died May 22, 2014.
She was born to the late T. Walter and Isabel Towne (Sutherland) on July 3, 1910, in Newburyport, Mass. She married the late N. Stanley Thompson in 1932, and they lived together in Newburyport for most of their 66 years together.
Esther was active in the Belleville Church, where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Service Club. She was also a member of the Choral Society of Newburyport for many years. Esther was involved with Girl Scouts as a leader, where the scouts knew her as "Sunshine."
Esther spent her last years at the Rockingham County Nursing Home, Brentwood, N.H. She had a great wit and a smile for all.
Esther is survived by three children, R. David Thompson and wife, Barbara of Bucksport, Maine, Eleanor R. Knight of Bellefontaine, Ohio, and Mary A Fowler-Walton of Epping, N.H. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, Robin A. Roaf of Eliot, Maine, Karen J. Sawyer of Newbury, Mass., Donna M. Roaf of Haverhill, Mass., Pamela L. Sawyer of Groveland, Mass., Glenn Thompson of Strong, Maine, Donald Thompson of Holden, Maine, Kathy Strickland of Searsport, Maine, Beverly Kostusyk of Winterport, Maine, Andrew Thompson of Washington, Maine, Sheryl Dolan of Lakesville, Ohio, Sharon Robinson of Quincy, Ohio, Mary Clem of Bellefontaine, Ohio, Ellen Trout of Lakesville, Leroy Clem of Lakesville, Teresa Webb of Louisiana; and 32 great-grandchildren; and 29 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Esther was predeceased by five sisters, Anne Towne, Alice Towne, Eleanor Towne, Edna Jewett, and Pauline Bishop.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations in Esther’s name be made out to the Belleville Congregational Church of Newburyport.
