West Newbury, MA — Elsie M. (Foren) Spalding, 90, longtime West Newbury resident, passed peacefully Sunday afternoon at Country Center for Health and Rehabilitation in Newburyport, with her loving family by her side. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard C. Spalding, who passed away Feb. 5, 1974.
Born in Springfield, Feb. 12, 1924, she was the daughter of the late James H. and Ellen T. (Lindquist) Foren. Elsie was a graduate of West Newbury High School, Class of 1941, followed by further studies at MacIntosh Business School.
For many years, she was the administrative medical secretary to the chief of heart surgery at Children’s Hospital in Boston and also served two terms as Select Woman for the Town of West Newbury in the early 1960s.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, who enjoyed being with her family. She took special interest in every one of them, was their greatest supporter, and the one who was always there to fix things, from scraped knees to broken hearts. Her love was unconditional and unending.
A woman of great faith and strong convictions, she was a longtime member of the West Newbury Congregational Church.
She is survived by her three children, Nancy A. Arakelian and husband, Robert of Groveland, James P. Spalding and wife, Martha of Salem, N.H., and Cynthia L. Sheehan and husband, John “Chip” of Raymond, N.H.; nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, along with several generations of nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Richard C. Spalding, Jr.; her granddaughter, Rachel A. Spalding; her grandson, Bryan R. Sheehan and her three siblings, James Foren, Marion Waitt and Jane Cutshall.
