Robert J. Murphy, 82


NEWBURYPORT — Robert James Murphy, 82, passed away on Saturday, July 24, 2010 surrounded by his family.

Bob was born in Tomahawk, N.C., on March 22, 1928 to Robert J. Murphy and Carolyn Newton Murphy. He was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Class of 1950 and served in the Korean War as Company Executive Officer and Company Commander of the First Engineers Battalion.

Bob was an industrial engineer, quality control engineer and research engineer in the apparel and metal products industries throughout his career. Following his retirement, he served on the Newburyport Harbor Commission, and volunteered at the Newburyport Custom House Maritime Museum and The Parker River National Wildlife Refuge.

He leaves his wife, Molly of Newburyport and was the devoted and much loved father and father-in-law to, Charlotte Nolan of Newburyport, Mary and Peter Goodwin of Weatogue, Conn., Kate and Peter Sundquist of Concord, Molly and Peter Ettenborough of Newburyport, and Finley and Brian Weatherford of Cockeysville, Md.; and nine grandchildren, Mary Kathryn Nolan, Megan and Peter Goodwin, Kirby and Jamie Sundquist, Max and Sam Ettenborough, and Sarah and Kyle Weatherford.

ARRANGEMENTS: A private ceremony will be held and he will be inurned at The U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Newburyport Custom House Maritime Museum, 25 Water St., Newburyport, MA 01950.
