AMESBURY — Albert William Stromquist, age 95, longtime Amesbury resident, died Saturday evening, January 21, 2012 at the Amesbury Village, with his loving family by his side. His beloved wife of 68 years, Dorothea I. (Rouse) Stromquist, died March 31, 2009.
Born in Lowell, October 21, 1916, he was the son of the late Herbert E. and Olga O. (Olson) Stromquist and was a graduate of Roosevelt High School in New York City, Class of 1934. During World War II, Mr. Stromquist served with the United States Navy from April 10, 1945 until his honorable discharge on April 6, 1946 with the rank of Seaman First Class. He worked in customer service and as a sales representative for Massachusetts Electric until his retirement in 1978.
Al was a longtime, active member of St. James Episcopal Church in Amesbury, where he was a past Warden of the Vestry as well as a choir member. He was very active with the Masons, having been a 60-plus-year member and two-time Past Master, 1964 and 1995, of Warren Lodge of Amesbury; Past High Priest of Trinity Chapter, RAM; Illustrious Past Master of Amesbury Council, R.& S.M. and Past Patron of Friendship Chapter, O.E.S. No. 58 of Amesbury. With his great baritone voice, Al was a member of the Haverhill Chapter of the S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. (Barbershop Singing Society) as well as the Over 64 Barbershop Quartet. Al and the rest of the barbershop members have delighted many area organizations with their tremendous musical talent.
He is survived by a son, Albert Jr., residing in Abu Dhabi, a daughter, Patricia and special family friend, Robert Buthmann of Salisbury, four grandchildren, Brian and Emily Stromquist, Janna Silvia and husband Robert of Amesbury, Michael Vedrani and wife, Susan of Portsmouth NH and three great granddaughters, Sarah Vedrani and Molly and Kate Silvia; a brother, Robert W. Stromquist of California and many special nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by brothers, Wilfred T. Stromquist and Herbert E, Stromquist Jr.
ARRANGEMENTS: An hour of visitation will be held Friday, January 27, 2012 from 10 to 11 A.M. at the Highland Chapel of Paul C. Rogers & Sons Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury, immediately followed by funeral services at the funeral home at 11 A.M. wbeginning with Masonic Services conducted by Warren Lodge and then the services with Rev. Michael Shirley officiating. Interment will follow in Bartlett Cemetery, Amesbury.
