Lorraine B. Davis

Amesbury, MA — Lorraine (Bartlett) Davis, 95, of Amesbury, died at her home Tuesday morning, March 12, 2013, surrounded by many of her family and friends. She was the wife of the late Clifton L. Davis, who died January 5, 1997, and with whom she shared 50 years of marriage.

Mrs. Davis was born in Newburyport on October 31, 1917, daughter of the late Abbie (Hunt) Bartlett and Theodore Bartlett. She was a graduate of Amesbury High School, Class of 1935, and furthered her education in Library Science at Northern Essex Community College.

Prior to moving to Amesbury in 1946 with her husband, she had lived in Salisbury. In Amesbury, she was a long-time member of the Market Street Baptist Church and that church’s Woman’s Guild and Choir, as well as a member of the Whittier Home Association. She was also a volunteer at the former Amesbury Hospital.

Mrs. Davis was a driver and teacher’s aid for Miss Betty’s Kindergarten. There she was known by the nickname “Auntie Rain” and has been lovingly referred to by that name by many over the years. She was the librarian for the Town of Salisbury for 17 years. She was an avid reader and enjoyed that position with access to so many books.

Lorraine developed a roadside ice cream business called “The Country Corner” in 1961 to give her children employment in their teenage years and it developed into a busy seasonal restaurant selling her homemade sandwiches and desserts.

After becoming legally blind in 1997, she chaired the Low Vision Group in Newburyport for many years, helping others with the same affliction to become more independent.

Mrs. Davis is survived by a son and daughter, Paul W. Davis, and his wife Sheryl, of Amesbury, and Frankie B. Lallemand, and her husband, John, of Amesbury, four granddaughters, Amy Sarette of Salisbury, Elizabeth Nikas of Merrimac, Allyson Nyman of Amesbury, and Ashley Laskiewicz of Freemont, N.H., eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of Carroll “Teddy” Bartlett of Amesbury, the late Frances Bailey of Amesbury and the late Theodore Bartlett of Portsmouth, N.H.
