John A. McElhiney, Jr., 50

North Andover, MA. — John A. McElhiney, Jr., passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 23. He was born in North Andover, the oldest son of John and the late Anne (Campbell) McElhiney.

He was a lifelong resident of North Andover and proud of his connections to the town. He attended St. Michael's school and graduated from North Andover High School with the class of 1981. John was an avid sports fan and in his youth played baseball, football and hockey. As an adult, he occasionally laced on his skates, but mostly stuck to golf. From an early age his keenest interest was in the family automotive business. All things with engines were a passion for him. Snowmobiles, motorbikes and later cars were his greatest interests. He went from doing odd jobs at J&T Auto to managing the business for his father. During this time he was active with the North Andover Merchants Association. He was most recently employed at Plum Automotive in Newburyport.

John really enjoyed traveling and his friends have many wonderful memories of trips taken to Florida, Las Vegas, Colorado, New York and Ireland. He was a man who loved to have a good time and made friends wherever he went. He was a founding member of an annual father-son camping trip that this year will mark its 16th anniversary. He coached youth hockey and baseball and was a former board member of the North Andover Booster Club. He was very active with North Andover Youth Hockey and Scarlet Knights Athletics.

By far his proudest accomplishment is the three beautiful sons he leaves behind. He was happiest taking Kevin to wrestling matches, watching Danny play football and baseball and seeing Johnny graduate from college. He was so proud of them all.

John is survived by his sons, John A. McElhiney III of Boston, Daniel and Kevin McElhiney of North Andover, his father, John A. McElhiney Sr. of Hampton, NH, his former wife, Catherine (Austin) of North Andover, his sisters, Lauri, wife of Brian Murray of North Andover, Mary of Hampton, N.H., brothers, Robert J.
